What are gashapon?
Gashapon or capsule toys are plastic or vinyl toys, typically packed in a plastic capsule and sold in Japan in vending machines. They generally come in a series, and the fun is to try and collect the whole set, by swapping with friends, or just by buying lots of them!
Gashapon, sometimes spelt gachapon, or gashopon is an onomatopoeic word, it refers to the sound a capsule makes when it drops from a vending machine.
Candy toys are similar, but are packaged in boxes as 'blind items', with a piece of candy, or some sweeties. Without the sweets, they are often referred to as series or trading toys, these generally are of a higher quality and the boxes themselves are well-designed, making them great to give as little gift.
